Orthopedics This Week: “New App Coordinates Care in Bundled Programs”
Thanks to a new application from ViiMed, surgeons, nurses, and clinical coordinators can have real-time communication with patients. The cloud-based application, EXTENDCare, connects patients and caregivers in bundled care programs.
As indicated in the August 1, 2016 news release, “On April 1, 2016, CMS [Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] announced a new model that tests bundled payments for total hip and total knee replacement surgeries. With an aim to improve care coordination and quality from pre-hospitalization through recovery, the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model applies to over 800 hospitals in 67 geographic areas. Hospitals in these areas are now accountable for the quality and cost of care throughout a patient’s entire treatment process, with financial incentives and penalties based on compliance. The rule was recently expanded to include hip and femur fractures, as well.”
